No grid required

Off-Grid Solar Systems for Edmonton-Area Properties

For cabins, acreages, remote shops and wells around the Capital Region, where a line extension quote costs more than a complete solar and battery system.

Stand-Alone Power Around the Capital Region

Out past the edge of the subdivisions, the cost of a grid connection climbs fast. Distance to the nearest line, poles across a quarter section and right-of-way all add up, and quotes in the tens of thousands are common for a cabin, a shop at the back of the property or a new build on raw land.

A properly designed off-grid system is often cheaper than that line, and there is no monthly bill once it is paid for.

It is a different design problem from rooftop grid-tie. There is no utility to fall back on in December, when Edmonton gets about seven and a half hours of daylight and the sun barely clears the spruce. The battery bank and the winter production figure set the size, not the June peak that looks good on a brochure.

Cold matters too. Lithium batteries can’t be charged below freezing, so they live in a heated space or come with built-in heating, and we plan for that from the start.

We also design smaller systems for seasonal cabins at the lakes west of the city. Many only need a pump, lights, a fridge and internet from May to October, and the right answer there is a much smaller system.

Call 250-250-2525 and tell us about the property and what needs to run. That conversation usually settles the rough scale.

What’s included

What an Off-Grid System Includes

Full load audit

Every appliance and circuit, what it draws and when. Well pumps, furnace blowers and shop tools have start-up surges that size the inverter as much as the everyday load.

Winter-first array design

Sized against December light, and usually ground-mounted at a steep angle of 55–65° so snow slides off and the panels face the low winter sun.

Battery bank and autonomy

You see the price of two days of stored power next to three or four, so you choose the level of cover rather than finding out in January.

Cold-rated battery placement

Batteries in a heated room or an insulated, heated enclosure, because lithium cells won’t accept a charge below freezing.

Generator integration

Auto-start generator backup for long grey stretches in November and December, set to run when it is needed and not otherwise.

Inverter-charger and controls

Sized for continuous and surge load, and laid out so one failed component doesn’t take the whole property down.

Pricing

Off-Grid Solar Costs

SystemSuitsInstalled cost
Cabin / seasonalLake cabin or recreational property, spring to fall$12,000 – $22,000
Full-time off-grid homeYear-round living, well pump, full appliances$40,000 – $75,000
Home + shop or farmResidence plus workshop or agricultural loadpriced after a load audit

Off-grid cost depends on load and days of autonomy, not floor area. Two houses the same size can differ by $25,000 depending on whether they heat with propane, wood or electricity, and whether there is a well.

Have a line-extension quote? Bring it along. Put next to the cost of an off-grid system, it often makes the decision on its own.

Why us

Why Off-Grid Owners Choose Us

Designed for January

Systems sized on summer output leave you running the generator all winter. We start with winter output.

Autonomy you choose

Each extra day of battery is priced separately, so nothing gets quietly padded.

Cold-climate details

Heated battery space, steep snow-shedding mounts and cold-rated components are part of the design.

Generator done right

Correct sizing, auto-start and sensible charge settings, so the generator stays a backup and not a daily habit.

Why we design for January

In December, Edmonton gets about seven and a half hours of daylight, and the sun barely clears the treeline. A December day can produce a fifth of a June day. An off-grid system sized on summer numbers runs the generator all winter.

We size the battery bank for the number of dark days you want to ride through, mount the array steep enough to shed snow and catch the low sun, keep the batteries warm, and set the generator to start only when it has to.

Steeper tilt, better winter. Ground mounts at 55–65° catch the low sun and shed snow on their own.

Process

How an Off-Grid Project Runs

  1. Load audit

Every circuit, what it draws, its start-up surge and when it runs.

  2. Site and winter model

Array location, tilt, shading and December production for your site.

  3. Battery decision

Autonomy options priced side by side.

  4. Build and commissioning

Including generator integration and a walkthrough of living with the system.

Have these ready

  • A year of power bills or the “kWh used” line from each. Twelve months tells us more than anything else.
  • Your address, so we can check roof direction, pitch and shade on satellite imagery.
  • A photo of your electrical panel with the door open. It shows whether an upgrade is needed.
  • Plans for an EV, heat pump, hot tub or garage suite, so the system is sized for them.
